The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining occasions – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president started showing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and this week research projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have attempted – really, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We went from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' into 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As confusing as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of love into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically definitely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to escape secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. The Savior's reaction to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.
The apparent and direct fact that Christ from scripture calls for a form of extreme compassion focused on the needy has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
So I have been heartened to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We shall require to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the finest aspects of American history.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or reject?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to what makes it unique and wonderful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it mean feigning the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith did not happen; it means both modesty and belief, a mixture that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
