Whenever a major honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
