Pick of the Week
This Satirical Thriller
The filmmaker's unflinching satire addresses the demanding standards for female beauty along with the perceived horrors of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a brilliant portrayal playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star reduced to hosting a fitness program on television. Pushed out by her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes a mysterious and gruesome treatment titled "The Substance". This creates a younger clone named Sue, resulting in a progressively toxic connection among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This suspenseful thriller stars Keira Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from writing about international wars to board an opulent ship with a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, plus additional extremely wealthy guests. But after a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and all passengers claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Out now, the Netflix platform
Presence
Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries in this clever supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The daughter appears aware of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor fully commits to his cult stardom through this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic celebrity playing himself who takes on a $1m payday to appear at a birthday party in Mallorca for billionaire superfan Javi. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, his unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, evening, the Channel 4 network
The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has left the children anxious. Once Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the old telephone on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. The actor acts as the greedy Jim, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin monetising the people's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain achieves to show Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel
This Espionage Thriller
This week's additional entry from the filmmaker delivers a espionage tale as tight similar to the collars sported by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to identify a traitor within their ranks from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful mind game of deception or honesty develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
